Catawba College possesses a 189-acre ecological preserve where students conduct field research. The preserve is part of a 300-acre wildlife refuge that the college acquired in 1999 from the LandTrust for Central North Carolina. It is currently under a conservation easement to protect its natural value and occupies the area at the confluence of Second Creek and the South Yadkin River. The Catawba College South Yadkin Wildlife Refuge provides a learning environment for Catawba students in the fields of wildlife management and land conservation.
