The Thread: A DNC Legacy Project!

The Democratic National Convention will bring the attention of the nation to Charlotte and our region in September. And some of that attention will help highlight the Carolina Thread Trail! We’ll share in the spotlight with other great local nonprofits and initiatives as a DNC legacy project leading up to and during the week of the convention Sept. 4-6, 2012.

Various Charlotte area nonprofits and programs will be identified as legacy projects in the categories of economic inclusion; youth and civic engagement; healthy children, healthy families; and energy, technology and community sustainability. The Thread is a legacy project touching all four categories.

CarolinaFest 2012 is a family friendly Labor Day celebration and convention week kick-off event that will be held in Uptown Charlotte on Sept. 3, 2012. The entire community is invited to this festival and subsequent events festival which will be held on each day of the convention. The Thread will have a booth there and will share and provide information to attendees, community residents and delegates. The kick-off event and festival will be held along Tryon Street.

Each day of the convention, beginning on Sept. 4, delegates and their families will be able to see and learn more about trails in our region as they experience Little Sugar Creek Greenway. The featured four-mile stretch of this popular greenway – from Uptown Charlotte to the Park Road Shopping Center – is part of The Thread. We’re working with Mecklenburg County Park and Rec to create a wonderful and dynamic learning experience about the benefits of trails, trail building and community collaboration throughout the region.

Also, delegates and their families will be encouraged to participate in group runs or walks along Little Sugar Creek Greenway as a great opportunity to stretch their legs and increase their heart rates before, during or after convention sessions.

We’re still ironing out the final details and logistics with the Charlotte 2012 Host Committee and Mecklenburg County, so we’ll continue to keep you in the loop. But, please mark your calendars for Sept. 3. And, if you’re in town, consider coming out and supporting the CarolinaFest 2012 celebration, Labor day festivities and The Thread! We appreciate the DNC Host Committee for its support and the invitation to be a legacy project. Click here for more information about Charlotte 2012.
