Unlike many endeavors of this type, the Carolina Thread Trail will be funded through a private capital campaign that will then be leveraged with state and federal funds. Local communities in the 15-county area will be invited to join the Carolina Thread Trail. They will be empowered through assistance from trail resources to create and implement their own community-based trail plans. The communities, working together, may apply for grants from the private pool of capital that will serve as local match funding for state and federal grant programs. Each community will decide where their local trail systems will connect, thus becoming part of The Thread. In this way, each community can participate in creating a regional legacy for future generations to enjoy.
